Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia<\/h3>\n

May 7 – 20, 2021<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the past two weeks, the trend of endangerment of citizens’ basic rights continued primarily through attacks on freedom of expression and freedom of assembly. Media and journalists have been targeted by institutional pressures and attacks through so-called SLAPP lawsuits demanding unrealistically high amounts of compensation, as well through physical attacks and preventing them to take statements from civic activists. On the other hand, civic activism has also been hampered by the filing of criminal charges against citizens who opposed the construction of a residential building in a public area with a park and playground for children. In addition to these cases, the previous period was marked by the Euronews television beginning its work, for which there are serious indications that it represents a violation of legal norms provided by the currently valid laws of the Republic of Serbia.<\/p>\n
