Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia
February 13, – March 5, 2026
In the previous reporting period, we recorded a continuation of attacks, pressures, and targeting of journalists, students, farmers, activists, and civil society organizations.
High-level state officials again publicly targeted journalists from N1 television, while students and citizens faced increasingly frequent incidents during field activities. During farmers’ protests across Serbia, numerous pressures and detentions were recorded. The police issued a large number of misdemeanor reports, and during the intervention at the blockade at the Badovinci border crossing, five people were detained, while at the protest at the Trbušnica border crossing near Loznica, another twelve people were detained. Incidents were also recorded during a protest in Novi Sad in front of the Serbian National Theatre, where students, citizens, and activists reported brutal physical attacks, harassment, and provocations by supporters of the Serbian Progressive Party, while the police did not intervene. At the same time, targeting of civil society organizations and the academic community continued.
