Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia

The past two weeks have been marked by pressure and threats against citizens, activists and journalists, discrimination against employees and obstruction of student organizing at higher education institutions, tensions and violence at gatherings and spying on student activists with advanced spy software.

In Užice, there was a conflict between citizens, activists, SNS supporters and police officers who gathered in the city square in front of the meeting of the Serbian Progressive Party, where the arrival of the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, was announced.At this gathering, journalists also experienced repression and being prevented from doing their work despite the accreditations they possessed.

Advanced Pegasus spyware was found on a student’s phone and she is just one of 14 students who were spied on and tapped. This form of repression is a gross violation of the laws of the Republic of Serbia and represents a dangerous form of persecution of activists and citizens who are active participants in the socio-political life of the country.
