05 May Memorialization tailored to the victims

Memorialization means remembering someone, honoring and respecting them and their life. It can take different forms, but all of them have the following in common: remembrance and respect.

In order to push back against the harmful narrative created around memorialization in the society, Civic Initiatives are opening a call for young artists from the region to submit a conceptual solution for the memorial dedicated to the victims of the wars in former Yugoslavia, to be placed in Serbia.

We invite all individuals, designers, artists, as well as all creatives to submit their proposals for visual identity for the memorial (monument, memorial center, mural, sculpture or digital art).

The requirements are:

  • Visual identity must illustrate the values related to peacebuilding, human dignity, reconciliation and remembrance.
  • The submitted solution should contain a visual illustration in vector format in pdf
  • The color codes used (CMYK, RGB and HEX) must also be provided.
  • The solution must be the original work of the author and must not maintain parts of another author’s work.
  • The submitted solution must not be in any way contrary to, or violate any legal regulations.
  • The solution must not promote hatred, discrimination or inconvenience to anyone.
  • The solutions can be in any form (digital, 3D, print, etc.)

Who can participate?

All interested individuals above the age of 18 can apply for the competition – designers, students, artists and all those engaged in visual art and/or design.

We strongly encourage artists to collaborate and apply in teams, especially multinational.

Information about the author must include: name and surname, e-mail address, telephone number, short biography and a short explanation of your work; By submitting the work, the participants accept all the conditions of the competition.
Documents and papers should be sent to the email address: civin@gradjanske.org by Friday, May 20 2022, at 5 PM.

We recommend that you don’t necessarily think about the feasibility of your solution in the current conditions, but rather concentrate on imagining what you see as a dignified memorial that preserves memory in its ideal form.

The author of the winning solution will be paid a fee in the amount of 1000 euros after the final decision of the expert jury and the harmonization of technical specifications. Also, the second and third place winners will be awarded with the amounts of 750 and 500 euros, respectively.

By applying to the competition and accepting the indicated award, in case of winning the awards, the Author agrees that the Organizer reserves the right to further dispose of the design for promotional and potentially commercial purposes, and will sign a statement.

The award will be presented at the “Mirëdita, dobar dan” festival on May 27, 2022.

The “Mirëdita, dobar dan” festival is an annual event that has been taking place every year since 2014. “Mirëdita, dobar dan!” festival merges the art, culture, advocacy, and public debate in one platform, which makes it unique of its kind. By bringing together artists, human rights and peace activists and opinion makers from Kosovo and Serbia, the festival enriches regional perspectives and fosters cooperation and peacebuilding. Besides presenting the best of the contemporary art scene, essential part of the festival are public debates and advocacy actions.

This call is a part of the project Strengthening inclusive victim voices, transforming narratives, which is supporting meaningful and victim-led transitional justice initiatives in Serbia, Kosovo and North Macedonia. Through this project, PAX, the International Centre for Transitional Justice (ICTJ), Integra and New Social Initiative (NSI) from Kosovo, Peace Action from N-Macedonia and Civic Initiatives from Serbia aim to generate national and regional policy initiatives dealing with the past, which meaningfully integrate the needs and demands of victims and other groups affected by the conflict and to counter hate and nationalistic discourses effectively.
