Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia

10 – 23 April, 2026

Recent events across Serbia point to a dangerous trend of coordinated use of force, institutional pressure, and direct violence targeting individuals who express any form of disagreement with official policies. In Valjevo and in front of the Faculty of Agriculture in Belgrade, students and citizens were detained by masked individuals who refused to identify themselves. In Bor, a young football player was expelled from his club after refusing to attend a ruling party rally, while an employee of the public utility company “JKP Gradska čistoća” was attacked from behind after speaking out about corruption. In Novi Sad, transport operator Miomir Jaćimović had his bus deliberately set on fire, while attacks on students have continued during nearly all student-led actions and campaigns.
