Three freedoms under the magnifying glass: 12-25 February, 2021

Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia

12-25 February 2021

After the two years of agony that journalist Milan Jovanović and his family went through after their house was set on fire, the court proceedings against the perpetrators and instigators of the crime finally got an epilogue in the form of convictions. On the other hand, the ignorant and cynical attitude of the Council of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media continued, given that this body made the decision to put N1, Nova S and Al Jazeera under their supervision, at the same time suspending their procedure against Pink TV due to death threats in their program. Another dangerous trend is becoming apparent in the media scene, and that is that following the example of the founding of government non-governmental (GONGO) associations, portals are appearing in local communities that take the name, visual identity and other features of existing media, thus misleading readers. They apply to local self-government competitions for co-financing media projects with suspicious projects for which they often receive funds.

An overview of the cases recorded during this period can be downloaded below.
