Three Freedoms Under the Magnifying Glass: 13 – 26 June 2025

Violations of Fundamental Human Rights in Serbia
13 – 26 June 2025

While the President of the Republic states that “the blockers have long been yearning for the baton of salvation,” the police and unknown assailants are taking it seriously. In Novi Sad, the police violently broke up the blockade in front of the City Assembly, injuring two people in the process, including one student. Unknown, masked men attacked a student in Novi Sad, and a group of masked men attempted to storm the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade and steal the famous banner.

Politically motivated arrests also continue. As in the case of Novi Sad activists and opposition politicians, two days before the Vidovdan protest, a wiretapped conversation of a group, mostly former military personnel, was published. Simultaneously with the release of the intercepted conversation in pro-government media, six people were arrested again on the same suspicion of allegedly preparing acts to overthrow the constitutional order. Political persecution of dissenters is taking place in Serbia, and we are entering a phase in which the existence of political prisoners is becoming a regular occurrence.

Attacks and threats against journalists have also continued, and the safety of those who work in the public interest at the local level is particularly at risk. During the observed period, two lawsuits with characteristics of SLAPPs were also recorded. One lawsuit was filed by the company Millennium Team, known for numerous lawsuits against the media, against visual artist, writer, and activist Dejan Atanacković.

More about these and other cases recorded in the previous period can be found in the full report below:
