Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia

20 November- 3 December 2020

Attacks on the media and journalists are becoming more frequent and serious, and the return of rhetoric that was dominant in Serbia in the last decade of the last century and the labeling of political dissidents as enemies of Serbia and foreign mercenaries is particularly worrying. The creation of such an atmosphere also leads to the concretization of the attack, which was felt by the journalist Dinko Gruhonjic, to whom inscriptions of very offensive content was written at the entrance of the building where he lives with his family. That there is no political will to overcome this problem, as well as to regulate the entire media scene, is shown by the lack of reaction of the competent authorities, but also the recent decision to re-nominate Olivera Zekic and Aleksandra Jankovic as candidates for membership in the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) Council, members who have already participated in the work of this body and their performances have negatively affected the reputation of this institution.
