Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia
4-17 December 2020
The past period was marked by the continuation of the trend of attacks on the media, but also personalized attacks on journalists, as well as numerous serious threats they faced. What connects all these cases is that no one has been prosecuted as responsible for these attacks, but that the only help to these people comes from the support of the solidarity of colleagues and the general public. In such an atmosphere, it is not surprising that Serbia has not opened a single negotiating chapter in the EU accession process this year, and that numerous reports from international organizations have detected a worrying situation in the areas of democracy, rule of law, media freedom and respect for human rights. For that reason, 90 civil society organizations appealed to the Government to create basic conditions for their participation and assistance in solving numerous problems that Serbia is facing, which will be more difficult in the future.
