Due to the new situation in the world caused by the global pandemic of the Covid-19 virus and the declaration of a state of emergency on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, in addition to violations of the rights to freedom of association, assembly and expression, given the circumstances, Civic Initiatives will monitor other human rights, Civic Initiatives have monitored all other human rights. Although the state of emergency in Serbia was lifted on May 6, given the large number of violations, the Civic Initiatives will continue to monitor the situation in the field of all human rights in the coming period.

Last week was marked by another confirmation of the difficult state of democracy in Serbia, embodied in the report of the international organization Freedom House, according to which Serbia was relegated from the category of “partially consolidated democracies” to the category of “hybrid regimes”. The latest case of an attempt to intimidate journalists and their sources by initiating an internal investigation within the Clinical Center of Vojvodina provides practical confirmation of that thesis in order to determine who provided information to journalist Ana Lalic, who was arrested for her writing. On the other hand, the deficit of democracy and deep social divisions led to unpleasant and dangerous scenes in front of the National Assembly which resulted in physical attacks and hunger strikes by various political actors, for various reasons.
