Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia
August 11 – August 24, 2023
The observed period from August 11 to August 24 was marked by numerous examples of violations of basic human rights.
The research portal KRIK was convicted in the proceedings following the lawsuit of Predrag Koluvija, because their article allegedly violated the presumption of innocence. For years, KRIK has been subjected to numerous SLAPP lawsuits aimed at silencing critical media.
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, repeatedly called Nova journalists “liars” at a press conference, thus continuing the practice of insulting and humiliating the media at conferences of high-ranking state officials.
Graffiti directed against the program director of the Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) Sofija Todorović appeared in the neighborhood where the activist lives. The attack on the activist was condemned by the Commissioner for Protection of Equality.
