Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia
August 22 – September 4, 2025
Ten months after the fall of the canopy, Novi Sad was the site of an unnecessary police intervention aimed at peacefully gathered citizens. After the commemorative walk, part of the crowd walked to the Faculty of Sports and Physical Education (DIF), where the dean burst in with the police and masked men earlier that day and kicked out the students from the faculty building. The citizens gathered in front of the Faculty, where the police were also present, who at one point suddenly started pushing the citizens in front of the DIF, and then started chasing the citizens who were returning home after the protest. The shameful and unjustified behavior of the police is happening on the day that marks 10 months since the tragedy that started a wave of civil and student protests against corruption.
In addition to DIF, incidents were also recorded in front of the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad. The dean entered the faculty building with a police and forbade the students to enter.
Attacks on journalists in Serbia have been at a record level in the last two months, according to a statement from Reporters Without Borders. In the observed period, the “arrest” of journalists by private security was also recorded because they tried to ask a question to the director of United Group. Questions were related to the attempts of the top authorities of Serbia to stifle free media in agreement with private actors.
