Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia
March 22 – April 4, 2024
The suppression of freedom of expression in the past two weeks has taken on a new dimension. The campaign of government representatives, mainly directed against journalists and representatives of the civil sector, also targeted faculty professors. Academic institutions, as the only remaining space in which a culture of dialogue, diversity, freedom of thought and expression is nurtured, have become a threat to a regime based on authoritarianism, fear and single-mindedness. The target this time is professor and journalist Dinko Gruhonjić, and the method is completely new. Spinning other people’s statements has turned into outright falsification, editing and content manipulation with the help of technology. The last act before the final seizure of all institutions and the expulsion of the unfit are the alarm for the final awakening. Today, on National Students’ day, one of their professors is the target, and the issue of academic freedom is on the exam.
