Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia

May 21 – June 3, 2021

The past period was marked by the continuation of the practice of filing SLAPP lawsuits against media and journalists, as well as the open targeting of critics of the government through social networks. Unfortunately, the problematic situation in practice threatens to be copied to the normative framework, as warned by the proposed draft Law on Civil Procedure, which would significantly limit citizens’ access to justice, and bring local media to the brink of extinction. The seriousness of the bad situation in the field of respect for fundamental rights and freedoms is also indicated by the findings of the semi-annual report of the European Commission regarding the negotiation chapters 23 and 24, which indicate that Serbia is constantly falling behind in this area.
