20 Dec Three Freedoms Under the Magnifying Glass: December 3-16, 2021
Belgrade, December 16, 2021-
Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia
December 3-16, 2021
The past two weeks have been very difficult for freedom of expression, assembly and association in Serbia.
N1 journalists were threatened again, this time with members of their families, while the police “warned” some local journalists not to come to the scheduled environmental protests and blockades. Journalists experienced attacks while reporting on protests and roadblocks, despite media associations’ appeals to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to ensure uninterrupted work for journalist teams that day. The Crime and Corruption Reporting Network is overwhelmed with SLAPP lawsuits.
Activists who took part in environmental protests were exposed to intimidation, threats and pressure. Police officers came to their doors and called them on the phone to warn them not to come to protests. A large number of protesters received misdemeanor fines for participating in roadblocks, mostly in smaller local communities.
