Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia during the state of emergency
13-15 April, 2020
Due to the new situation in the world caused by the global pandemic of the Covid-19 virus and the declaration of a state of emergency on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, in addition to violations of the rights to freedom of association, assembly and expression, given the circumstances, Civic Initiatives will monitor other human rights in the coming period.
The past period was marked by further aggravation of the media reporting on the state and consequences of the crisis caused by the corona virus pandemic, as well as the continuation of the negative campaign against television “N1”, journalist Ana Lalic and members of opposition organizations by the daily “Kurir”. The situation in Serbia and the absence of parliamentary control of the executive power became a topic outside the borders of Serbia, which was also discussed by representatives of the European Union institutions. In addition to the continued suppression of media freedoms, the subordination of the legislature and the judiciary to the executive power, the legal uncertainty generated by unfounded detentions and accelerated trials via Skype, the public in Serbia was also disturbed by the appearance of the video of police brutality against a person who allegedly violated the curfew.
An overview of the cases recorded during this period can be downloaded below.
