Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia during the state of emergency

16-20 April, 2020

Due to the new situation in the world caused by the global pandemic of the Covid-19 virus and the declaration of a state of emergency on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, in addition to violations of the rights to freedom of association, assembly and expression, given the circumstances, Civic Initiatives will monitor other human rights in the coming period.

The previous period was marked by the news that a group of 21 MEPs had indicated a worrying violation of the rights and abuse of the state of emergency in Serbia. The letter emphasizes media censorship, as well as the showdown with political opponents. There is a continuation of the tabloid campaign against free media and journalists, with the absence of reaction from competent authorities. On the other hand, the Government’s attempt to make a decree for creating a basis for the resolution of the economic consequences of the crisis caused by the virus pandemic has raised many questions about its interpretation, and the ambiguities of certain provisions have led to unfair treatment of individual employers, which has caused damage to workers who have been deprived of parts of their earnings. A potentially major problem may also be the failure of a medical facility whose access data has been publicly available on the internet for eight days, exposing the data on tested, infected and deceased patients to a possibility for being abused.

An overview of the cases recorded during this period can be downloaded below.
