Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia

2 – 18 September, 2022

The observed period from September 2 to 18, 2022 was marked by numerous violations of basic and human rights and freedoms, especially immediately before and during EuroPride.

MP and member of the Parliamentary Committee for Culture and Information Nebojša Bakarec targeted critically oriented media through social networks. The private security of the Galens company stopped activists while they were moving on a public road within the Fruška Gora National Park. Several drivers of Belgrade’s public transport were fired after speaking at a protest where they pointed out the working conditions in this public company. Several children who stay in the kindergarten in the town of Pećinci were left without a place in the preschool institution, and the parents claim that they were punished by the Serbian Progressive Party because they are members of the opposition Democratic Party.

Environmental activists camping on Mount Starica near Majdanpek were attacked again, this time by workers employed by the company Zijin. The premises of the Zajedno party in Novi Sad were attacked by an unknown person, who demolished the front office door with an ax.

EuroPride 2022 was marked by attacks on participants, journalists, clashes between hooligan groups and members of the police, and previously by uncertainty as to whether this event will take place at all, taking into account administrative procedures and conflicting statements by the highest public officials. Within this edition of the report “Three Freedoms Under the Magnifying Glass “, a special supplement has been prepared that summarizes the most important events that marked EuroPride 2022 on September 17, 2022.
