Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia during the state of emergency
27-30 April, 2020
Due to the new situation in the world caused by the global pandemic of the Covid-19 virus and the declaration of a state of emergency on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, in addition to violations of the rights to freedom of association, assembly and expression, given the circumstances, Civic Initiatives will monitor other human rights in the coming period.
Attacks on the independent media and journalists who are professionally doing their work continues, with Prime Minister Ana Brnabic playing an important role in their discredit, accusing some of them of being “tycoon media” in the National Assembly. At the same time, local media continue to face significant restrictions on access to truthful information, making it common for citizens to suspect in information about the number of infected and deceased by the corona virus. There was also a dangerous performance with torches on the roofs of buildings during a ban on movement involving supporters of the ruling party and groups of hooligans against citizens who each night express their dissatisfaction from their balconies and windows as well as against political opponents. It is particularly worrying that the call for this performance came from the MP, members of the ruling party as well as the GONGO association, with no response from the competent authorities.
