Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia
28 August- 10 September 2020
Due to the new situation in the world caused by the global pandemic of the Covid-19 virus and the declaration of a state of emergency on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, in addition to violations of the rights to freedom of association, assembly and expression, given the circumstances, Civic Initiatives will monitor other human rights, Civic Initiatives have monitored all other human rights. Although the state of emergency in Serbia was lifted on May 6, given the large number of violations, Civic Initiatives will continue to monitor the situation in the field of all human rights in the coming period.
The past period was marked by the trend of unpunished attacks on journalists and surprising decisions of the competent institutions. The public was shocked by the decision to overturn the first-instance verdict for the murder of Slavko Ćuruvija, which creates fears that every crime and attack on journalists could go unpunished. On the same track is the decision to reject the criminal complaint filed by the journalist of KRIK Bojana Jovanovic against unknown men who were in the company of the son of President Aleksandar Vučić, and who forcibly took away her phone. It is obvious that the passive attitude of the institutions provides informal support for further attacks on journalists and attempts to stifle freedom of expression.
