Three freedoms under the magnifying glass: 30 April- 4 May2020

Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia during the state of emergency

30 April- 4 May 2020

Due to the new situation in the world caused by the global pandemic of the Covid-19 virus and the declaration of a state of emergency on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, in addition to violations of the rights to freedom of association, assembly and expression, given the circumstances, Civic Initiatives will monitor other human rights in the coming period.

Social divisions, which create worrying tension, have been further deepened by the performances of activists of the ruling party, who release messages against the opposition from the roofs of buildings during the ban on movement, using a large amount of pyrotechnics. This performance is also directed against the citizens who every night express their dissatisfaction with the current government, from their balconies and windows. As before, the biggest problem is the silence of the competent institutions and their unwillingness to face the existing problems. This is also evidenced by a statement by the Ministry of Culture and Information on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, in which they emphasized the obligation of journalists to report truthfully to the public. At the same time, the Ministry has not been responding to the persecution that journalist Ana Lalic has been suffering for weeks and the latest in a series of such incidents was cutting the tire on her car.
