Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia

9-16 July 2020

Due to the new situation in the world caused by the global pandemic of the Covid-19 virus and the declaration of a state of emergency on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, in addition to violations of the rights to freedom of association, assembly and expression, given the circumstances, Civic Initiatives will monitor other human rights, Civic Initiatives have monitored all other human rights. Although the state of emergency in Serbia was lifted on May 6, given the large number of violations, the Civic Initiatives will continue to monitor the situation in the field of all human rights in the coming period.

The past period was marked by events related to protests that were held every day with a smaller number of people. Due to the excessive, unjustified and illegal use of force during the first three days of the protest, as well as the absence of reactions from the competent institutions, a group of non-governmental organizations sent an urgent appeal to the UN Special Rapporteur against Torture to react to these events. What is worrying is the large number of recorded attacks on journalists during the protest. According to the journalists’ associations, as many as 28 journalists were the target of attacks at protests in Belgrade, Nis and Novi Sad.

An overview of the cases recorded during this period can be downloaded below.
