Violations of basic freedoms in Serbia

June 18 – July 1, 2021

The past period was marked by the continuation of the trend of further collapse of fundamental rights and freedoms in Serbia, as well as the lack of interest of state bodies to deal with this problem in an adequate way. Social tensions, which in the last two weeks have been additionally stimulated by current political events, have led to an increase in the number of verbal attacks and threats against journalists, as well as to an institutional restriction on expressing critical views on the work of the current government. It should also be mentioned that the process of drafting a strategic act, ie the National Assessment of the Vulnerability of the Non-Profit Sector to Terrorist Financing, has begun, but that the course of the process so far, as well as the way it started, does not leave much room for optimism that it will be enacted in a legitimate and effective way, which is why civil society organizations have sought to stop it and restart it on a completely different basis.
